Hey guys I'm Magnus, I'm new here. Boats have been part of my family for many many many generations, but I prefer classic cars so I have never been a huge fan of boats. But when my mother refused to let me buy a car I started to look for an alternative, turns out I can legally drive a boat that goes slower than 12 mph / 20 kmh and insurrance is very cheap. But I have no idea how much hp would keep it under 12 mph / 20 kmh or slightly faster. Can I post links here to show you guys what kind of boat I want to buy?

Yes, post links!
There should be a screw to adjust/limit the throttle opening; whether that is enough depends on the laws of the country you're in. I mean, all boats can go slower than 12mph.

On those boats the planing speed exceeds what you are allowed to do, so you will be restricted to displacement speeds which I imagine will be about 5-6 mph on those boats you've shown. Any engine capable of holding it at 12mph will likely also have the power to also bring it on the plane and well exceed your speed limitation.

Thanks for your reply, of course any boat can go slower than that but I'd rather not have something that will nearly idle at 12 mph. I want a boat similar to these, can someone tell me what would be a suitable amount of hp? I don't want something too slow but it can't go too fast either.

20 or 10hp on those would be fine, given what you want. 40-50hp would be much better for "normal" use. The 10 or 20hp engine would be more than idling at 12mph

Think you will find that your law is written so that you cannot drive a boat that will exceed 20kmh, rather than a boat that is faster and you keep the speed below that. This effectively limits you to a boat like the one in the second advert that only has a 9.9pk engine so wil. not even be capable of achieving your maximum speed. Rather pointless buying a boat like that as it will not be particularly pleasant to drive all the time at low speed. You will be better looking for a proper displacement boat, of which there are many available where you live and are the sort of boat the law intends you to use.

That's what I meant, but I also meant that if the boat is faster I would just limit the throttle so that the engine can't make it go faster than 12 mph. But I'll get a boat with around 10 hp then, thanks guys.
