I sailed one for a while, pre-foiler days..... bloody hard work.... bloody good fun.... seriously seriously seriously quick....
That clip is almost certainly a guy called Rohan Veal.... knows his way around Moths having won the world chamiponships at least twice....
I saw one recently at a large inland venue overtake a 49'er........ and for thoses of you that have dinghy racing backgrounds and will appreciate the significance, the PY was usually 1001 until they started foiling them, so you've got an idea of what speed gain the foils have offered...
It isn't an accident that the Moth sailors don't talk about capsizes, but refer to them as crashes... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Tried shouting "Starboard" at one of they from a 72 foot gaff schooner once, with the inevitable result. Not much left of the Moth afterwards. It hit us but we couldn't even find out where as there wasn't a scratch mark to be seen.
When the Laser first came out, it was faster than the Moths of its day. Shows how much they've moved on, Moths are now rated faster than a Fireball. Does the PY cover foiling, does anyone know?
They split the PY for foilers and non foilers, as the speed difference is so great, that with the self updating PY system, based on results being fed back by the clubs, it would have made a mockery of the whole thing.....
Even the non foilers are quick.... mine was only 30cm of beam excluding the wings....
Have a look a bit further on, and you will find a couple of clips of 18' skiffs foiling!! Now that does look like quite serious fun...three on board, two on the wire and all of you about a metre above the water!!
