Waxing the shrouds on an International 420 ... to make it go faster ... it would've helped if the chap had learnt to sail first though ... thrashed him in a boat that was 20 years older than his ... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
keep your beer cool in a plstic bag over the side when at anchor... tried it went off in the dinghy climbed back on.. bag split... beer escaped ... back in the dinghy got 1 can back! .. smeaks went thirsty and bought a cool box!
Unless you want to pay the crew's bar bill, don't be the last one to stand when the traditional toast of "Gybe-ho!" is called. Such is the competition, that others may well try and wrestle you down. Don't let them win!
As a general strategy, I agree. As serious navigational advice to a newbie (me) about to buy their first cruising boat, not so good. This was a long time ago, well before GPS and the boat in question didn't even have Decca. Having done that trip countless times since, I know just how wrong it was. With strong cross-tides and the island very often shrouded in fog it is surprisingly easy to miss it altogether.
