After a slight snafu with over budgeting for this weeks sailing I need to shed some cash.
Looking for ways to get receipts for berthing.
Decided to try Berthon in Lymington tonight (£40 for a 34ft)
Anywhere in the Solent that outdoes that for cost? (Not Gosport)

Beaulieu is £34 for a 34ft overnight in the marina.
It is years and years since I've stayed at Berthon due to the fees.
(Berthon is over £46 plus electric for us.)

I think you will find electricity has been included for well over a year, and now the wifi has been upgraded that is free, too.

And your boat would be under £46 not over.

Whilst people may consider marinas expensive I don't necessarily think the charges are excessive.
The returns on the investment can't be that great.
It's the equivalent to chartering a boat. It might seem expensive for the period of the charter but it's much cheaper than owning a boat with a fraction of the headache.

For my boat (12.2m), Yarmouth finger pontoon on a fri/sat/bank hol + electricity + 1 shower token would be the same price as Berthon. More shower tokens would make it more than Berthon. A comparison of the facilities would be quite a short discussion.

I've only been to Berthon once but although it's normally out of my league price-wise, if you're splitting the cost with a few others you do at least get something quite nice for your money. Never been on the walkashores at Yarmouth on a summer weekend and highly unlikely to at those prices.

The most I've ever paid in the Solent was......

£13.50.

Per Metre

Per Night.

And electricity was not included.

Well spotted. The website fails to point out that electricity is free for Overnight Visitors. It is only £1/day when the longer term casual rate is applied and a meter is in place.

Out of interest, anybody know if Berthon charges a mark-up on their electricity, in addition to the £1/day?
How does the "per unit" charge compare with what householders get charged?

Yarmouth has consistently been more expensive for me. They charge for electric and they charge for (comparatively poor) showers. Berthon has always felt pretty cheap to me, even when they gave me a 40' berth for my 20' boat (to myself) and the pontoon was higher than my deck.

I have no connection with them at all but to be honest if they put the price up I'd still think it worth it. Why would a 5* hotel (Berthon) charge the same as a youth hostel (Yarmouth)? or even a travel lodge (Cowes)? Come to think of it, why would it only be twice the price of a campsite (Newtown)?

Bit out of the way, but try Dart Marina.
They are using a random number generator to get their prices.

10.3m costs £50.99 but that does include facilities with baths and free wi-fi. Almost more than the boat is worth.

Oh, electricity is extra!

Industry market research confirms what most people already know ....

the most important factor to marina visitors is the location. This is why marinas in Lymington see more visitors than Gosport, for example. On a fine summer's Saturday evening both marinas and the Harbour master are turning visitors away from about 5pm onwards. There simply is nowhere for any more boats to moor, yet they still keep coming up the river and are disappointed, sometimes even angry, when they are told they should have made a reservation at least 24 hours previously.

I just had a look at Lymington on Google maps. It looks like high density mooring, like a block of flats, why would anyone want to go there, and be charged through the nose for the privilege?
It obviously has some attraction - it fills to capacity most weekends. Google maps probably doesn't give you much of a picture of the reality.

I can stay in a good hotel for that money and they clean the rooms, and throw in a cooked breakfast!

Different type of accommodation I know. But I would really like to see the business plan they work too.
