I am planning to go to the London Boat Show tomorrow and was just perusing through the list of companies that are attending when I saw Bucklers Hard Boat Builders was attending. Years ago I kept a Red Fox there both on hard standing and swing mooring top of the river. I thought I'd just pay the site a visit to see what there winter storage charges were. I was staggered to see that they charged £308.10 just to lift out a Centaur, okay they might wash it down and supply blocks but that has to be top of the price list.
Thornham were I am now works out at £227.17 for the same job. What is the most expensive and cheapest facility on the south-coast. Just curious really something to do while dreaming about the warm summer days and nights ahead of us.

Just been quoted £375 for a lift and scrub on one tide.

12m boat.

I think it's feckin outrageous, but it has to be done

Anything in the Beaulieu river seems to be on it's own ridiculous currency...their visitors marina berths are ridiculous...and you're not exactly getting much for your money either...

It goes with the territory of boat ownership I suppose, but that shouldn't be the case. Most of us are not wealthy people and owning a boat is the only real pleasure we have. Perhaps naming and shaming might have an effect but I doubt it.

In the 21st century we still have legalised piracy!

Tony,

have a look at the 'pub & restaurant guide' forum, some all too predictable comments about the Master Builders' at Bucklers Hard.

It would be a lovely place if Montagu didn't have his clammy claws on it ' they've got nowhere else to go, fleece them then release the hounds, Smithers ! '

Sorry, I kind of like the place BUT:

1) I like the sail up the river,
2) I normally visit off season,
3) I go for the night weekday preferred,
4) I normally only go once or twice a season,
5) I stay in the bar not the Master Builders restaurant,
^) I expect it to be expensive,
Each to there own...

Thornham were doing a lift out deal and jet wash for £25 in the summer for a few weeks - I hope they do the same deal this year but it was part of an anniversary celebration so probably won't.

Try Bosham Yacht Company - dry off against the pier and they will jet wash for you... probably :)

Thats absolutely outrageous. OK I would expect our club to be cheaper but they still have to pay labour and machinery repairs / depreciation. So why is the club £50 and the marina £ 375???

In addition, no charge to go up the river, unlike Hamble, who's HM wanted £7 harbour dues, I told him I'm not paying and will never return that's theft in any other language, he was not pleased.

WTF? tell me you are joking? there was a miss understanding? Why did he want to charge you that? Where you going to use a mooring?

He also gave me a Hamble river booklet showing the charge, and no it's not for a mooring, short stay, or stopping to go ashore, it's Harbour dues for transiting the river, Even Edward Montague doesn't do that, and he owns the river at Beaulieu.

As l'escargot pointed out, it can be cheaper than the Hamble. The lord could turn it into a marine Disneyland but I think he pitches it about right. The Beauleigh River is quite unspoiled as Rivers go, lots of wildlife and scenery. It suits First Mate and I a few times a year-we quite like it. Another vote for the sealift-works great for us.

in and out

west wales in and out for a moody 34 £310. pick up wash off ,engine service + out bord eng £480. +stand rent £16 a week x 4 months plus recommission to go back in. plus antifouling +polishing plus any up dateing = lots of££££££

C & C Marine Services in Plymouth. About £250 for lift, pressure wash, up to a week in the cradle including hire, and relaunch. Same rate for last three years, as they say they know there is a recession. I believe their crane can lift up to 6.5 tonnes; it certainly lifts our 36' Jeanneau.

No connection, just a very satisfied customer.

They say that there are no hidden charges. However you have to go down the page to see that VAT has to be added on.

In France all prices quoted to, or aimed at, the public must include VAT.

Professionals can take it off if they need to.
