Does anyone know of a morse type control system which will fit (and look OK on) an old wooden boat? Apparently most controls are made for mounting on thin fibreglass sections and wont fit a thicker wooden mounting bulkhead. It is also a small cockpit so we are looking for a very compact one.

OK, I'm not that bothered about it looking olde worldey brass and wood as long as it is fairly unobtrusive; the classic marine one doesn't seem to be a morse (2 cable) control as such.

So does anyone know of a standard morse control which will go on a wooden cockpit side rather than a thin fibre glass one. Perhaps there is a way of adapting the standard ones.

Have a look at the Vetus ones, particularly the stainless ones if you are feeling rich!. The mounting onto the panel will take up to 20mm, but if your cockpit side is thicker than that, you can cut out a recess on the inside for the mechanism. The take off for the cables is approx 40mm from the front of the panel. So if your cockpit side is 1 1/4 inch (30mm) thick you will need to take out 10mm to the shape of the mechanism.

Hope this helps

I have fitted the standard black rubber handled one in the past, but made it less foul by fitting it from behind so just the spline sticks through for the handle. Bin the plastic cover.
The handle was made socially acceptable by chopping off the rubber bit and fitting a teak handle instead. Respray the black with 'Insta-bronze' (VW 'sand 'car paint) and you have a better looking but modern system.

Fit as described by Tranona, but typed at the same time!!

The Canadian side mounted Kobelt is a good looking indestructible of the type. Comes in bronze or chromed bronze - from Hamilton Jet here. Price will make your eyes water but they are sometimes offered on ebay (new) and it's only really twice what the plastic ones are. Have it as something that they'll put in your barrow with you, when you go!
