Posted this in practical by accident

Im just wishing to query this not actually do the work myself

In the past few weeks we had gone from no reverse to having reverse.

Reverse has been 'clunky' its not been the easiest to engage.

Forwards on both engines has been ok, although 1 engine appears to not pull full revs on 'full throttle'

Now it appears 1 of the engines its tricky to tell if its in neutral at all.

On my own logic, im thinking this all seems to be related to the adjustment of these cables? To ensure gear selection is correct and full revs at full throttle, a bit like a calibration setting? The drives have been fully re built and have only had a handful of hours on them

Could These symptoms also point at the need to replace the throttle cables? As im assuming that is a major job.

My reasoning for asking, our engineer seems to think they may need replaced. However he was also up for removing the turbos for pressure testing when the fault i queried last time was fixed by swapping a fuel filter.

We have had forward, reverse and neutral on both engines in previous weeks, just a little confused as to how they can alter themselves so quickly.

If the work is easy enough for a beginner whos ok with tools feel free to give some ideas and i'll see if its something i can tackle

Mine were relatively simple to do.. But i have no flybridge, just a single station. It certainly was not a bad job....
Genuine morse controls are not cheap, but being as most these days engines are fly by wire, can be found for reasonable money with traders clearing out older stock. Mine were half retail price, so i was happy

We have 2 steering stations - lower and flybridge

We havent looked or tried the fly bridge yet.

they are 'vetus' or 'volvo penta' throttle controls from what ive been digging about trying to find out as 1 is missing a cover which appears to be a greyish plastic.

i get the feeling im not getting all of the info on this due to lack of knowledge as our engineer checked them out yesterday and said theres no fault, yet my dad is adamant they arent right. i need to get check for myself really but just want to have it straight in my head what im going to be looking for and expecting to see.

can you adjust these to make gear selection smoother/easier at all?

EDIT - they are dual not single too.

CHECK THE FLY BRIDGE ARE IN NEUTRAL FIRST. This can effect the lower station, Morse have a change over cam fitted, others do not and can get shifted by the canopy.

You are likely to have to go back and adjust all the cables starting with everything in neutral and mid stroke for the gears
Depending on whose method has been used you will have a lot of cables
Morse used a station selector that used a change over cable operated by a tee handle at one station that also locked the non use control in neutral
The volvo system used ds units for gear but a lost motion link with two throttle cables on each engine
Vetus used a piggy back connection for gear and same as volvo for throttle
Can you see what you have fitted?
The correct way to set them up is to start with the cables from ds units to drive and then ds unit to control middling any play
It would be worth doing a check on the boat and then on line for installation instructions
It is takes time and if the person doing it does not know what they are doing it can be confusing " actually just trying to explain it can get confusing"
The actual controls are the easiest parts and are virtually interchangeable the cables are all the same just remember although the cables are 3" nominal stroke the are more likely to be only 2 1/2" actual movement
