This year we are continuing our trip down into the Med, setting off from S. Portugal some time at the end of May. I need to find somewhere to park the boat for around a couple of months June/July before taking up the trip when the school holidays start. I don't really fancy Mediterranean Spain. Many posts on this forum have been very negative. It is also likely to be expensive. Likewise, the Balearics. I wondered about Morocco as a possible stopover. Anyone with experience and advice? Next question concerns overwintering. I had considered Malta, but another possible option would be Tunisia. Again, I would be pleased to hear from anyone with experience or recommendations.

Hi

We found Morocco an easy and interesting place to visit on our way into the Med. We visited Morocco via Ceuta - Spains enclave on the North African coast - Visiting Tetouan and Tangier by road. The marina at Ceuta is safe, well protected, secure and an easy daysail from Gibraltar once you’ve missed all the ships in the Strait. Berthing cost €16.80 per night for a 35ft boat at high season rates. You can get some nasty tide/current races near the harbour approach so be careful in poor weather. Ceuta is also an interesting place in itself. You can also travel further down the coast to the Moroccan port of Smir - although we didn’t take the boat there we did visit by road and the marina looked good, although it is within a resort. Cruisiers we know who have taken their yacht to Smir have had a good experience.

As far as over wintering, I can highly recommend Malta, which is where we are currently. If you would like more info, I’d be happy to give you my £0.02.

Coming into the Med, we met many people raving about Tunisia, but not many had actually been there - it seems to me one of these things that gets passed around. I too am one of those who hasn’t been there, but of the Cruisers I have met here in Malta who have either cruised or wintered there, I have been left with the impression that it’s a place you will either love or hate - so maybe check it out for yourself before committing - its not far back to Malta if you don‘t think its for you. Saying that though, the French and German cruisers seem to love it!

Cheers

Hitrapia, Ceuta was a possible choice for the interim stopover. I guess they may be amenable to a discount on the day rate for longer stays. The other consideration in our particular circumstances is the availability of lower cost air links to the UK.
Re Malta, I'd be more than grateful for your two pennorth.Shall I PM you?

I have been up and down the Tunisian coast 3 times - some of the nicest and most interesting places in the Med. Tunisia has been doing 'tourism' as a major industry since the 50s and they are good at it and very welcoming - no need to speak French but of course it can help - very safe, very inexpensive, welcoming. Morocco is good too although only just beginning into the tourist trade by comparison with Tunisia.. I have been into Morocco 30 odd times by boat but would think twice about spending more than a week or two there at a time. The culture difference is big - the marinas are few and far between and expensive.. I love the place which is why I go so often but would not over winter there.
As Posted Malta is also OK - a bit dull by comparison but an excellent place to refit and hauling is inexpensive and very secure compounds.
