Same correspondent sent some more pix. Quite horrific - this is Zeas Marina a couple of days ago. The beautiful Acajou, mahogany boat built in Cannes, first pic, seems to have suffered more than yesterday's pix suggested. The waves have smashed the breakwater.

Bloody hell
Some of those pics do not seem real.
Makes you wonder if some parts of the world are getting the backlash of the Tsunami, cos we seem to be experiencing some strange weather of late.

Bad.....

I was in the E Med about this time last year and had F10/F11 off the Syria / Lebanon.

If fact many boats dragged anchor and one large container ship went onto the breakwater in lattakia.

What was scary was the speed in which the conditions went from calm in throu the morning to full gale by 1600hrs.

later (3/4 days ) after the storm passed there were water spouts all over the place!

Best at sea when this happens..........

Echo the sentiments, ie Bloody Hell !
Amazing pictures though, makes me think that even though we in the UK have crappy weather for most of the year, at least it never gets as bad as that here

Hell.

I think you said this was the E Med. What were conditions like at the same time around the South of France, Spain, Italy and Greece?

Such a sad sight to see those boats in that condition. I can't get over the fact that there are obviously people on board some of them. Looks like there wasn't much they could do about things /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

All those big boats would have had crew on them, they are never left unattended. But as you say there wasn't much they could do to avoid damage completely. I dont know if any would have been better putting to sea - at least there would have been no concrete to hit out there. but dunno if that would have made sense, dunno about the exact conditions. Boats like that would have had competent experienced professional crew, in general

I was in Antibes france Sunday - was blowing a good F7 and tricky plane landing about 11pm Saturday night. Sunny and warm though. But no damage that I could see, and the wind only started up Saturday and died down monday. Learner has been there, he will know more. Dunno about the rest of the Med but I spect the W Med in general has been ok

The marina in these pics, Zeas, is near Piraeus, Athens. I image there could be other damage in the E Med

Zeas Marina is smack in the middle of Piraeus. That kind of weather is unknown there. Imagine something like that coming up the Thames. You can get strong winds in the Aegean just round the corner of the Attica peninsula but the Saronic gulf where this happened is known to be fairly protected. The storm that hit them passed over Corfu during the night, with high winds breaking a lot of tree branches and lifting a tile or two of my roof, but there was none or little damage to boats. I think the slightly unusual direction of the winds combined with their strength resulted in these horror pictures.

Majorca

A heavy gale blew through Majorca a few days ago described as a F10 by my 'woman what does' although I doubt it was that wild. My boat in Palma clouted the quay apparently but has only 'scuff' damage. Other boats seem to have sustained damage as well

I took some more pics of damaged Acajou. It is a real shame. Check the rest on the following link :

http://www.techmati.com/yachts/acajou/index2.htm

Many of the superyachts in Zeas Marina have damages from banging against each other at the top of the superstructures and at the railings. Fenders no use in the waves that came into the marina which had about 5 huge sections of the breakwater demolished by the waves. lots of claims being persued between the yachts next to each other.

Weather service said it was gusting to 11bf in the Aegean at the time. Even north of Athens the winds were quite violent.
