I have a need to install two gyrocompasses; one for autopilot and another for autolevelling trim.

I am still researching whether one will talk to both systems (one is proprietary and therefore needs some sort of translation box to make it talk to the wider group).

Obviously these sensitive instruments need to be protected from magnetic sources, tools etc…but can I put them near EACHOTHER?

Would be good to have them in the same place for ease of installation...

Cheers!
Stef

Gyrocompasses can be placed fairly near each other - they don't measure the earth's magnetic field, and on big ships they are usually in the same room in the middle of the ship.

You can definitely put them next to each other.
At work on my vessel we have 2 gyros and they are in a room full of electonics and mounted on the floor next to each other. One gyro feeds everything on the wheelhouse, a clever box compares the 2 gyro's and TMC (transmitting magnetic compass) and sounds an alarm if the headings change beyond a pre-determined amount.
The gyros are not affected by magnetic or electric fields. They just need a reliable electric supply - that's about it.
All I would say is that any violent motion may affect them so locate them within the boat where they will experience minimum up/down and side to side motion.
Check with the manufacturers of your specific equipment re, location.

As mentioned a gyro compass should not be affected by any magnetic influence - however a cheaper flux gate compass will be affected by magnetic influence.

As mentioned afore as long as it doesn't have fluxgate in it (i.e. it's not a gyro-magnetic compass) you should be with having them any distance from each other. I would read the installation instructions carefully though as where you place thrm on your boat could have a big effect on on the out put from them.
