I spotted his first mistake (I don’t count the first attempt at lead pouring!) today:

What is the mistake?

Reeving small brass or bronze chain through the limber holes. The idea is that you pull on one end to clear any blockages.

The idea goes back to 1900 or so, but we’ve had polyester rope for the last fifty years.

The small chain corrodes and has very little strength in the first place so it soon comes away in your hand.

I replaced mine with a length of small polyester rope with lots of knots in it about 1973. iirc. Cheaper and better.

I’d recommend 4mm line and lots of figures of 8, left slack but with bungee cord clear of the bilges at both ends so you can pull on it in either direction.
