Following previous posts, I have bought the Maplin L21AZ for £40 - camera, 18m cable, 12 V PSU
The output is specced as 350 lines, 512x492 pixels and terminates in a yellow phono plug with BNC adaptor. I think the E series plotter has PC like VGA sockets for video - is that correct and if so apparently I need a converter from the bnc input to VGA out - is that also true - if so is there a cheaper way of getting that than the £40 adapter Maplins tried to sell me
Thanks as always for advice

I fitted this exact model to my boat 3 weeks ago.
You should have a Raymarine std video-out cable with your plotter. It has a serial connector 1 end and 4off BNC male the other end as you are allowed 4 video inputs to the E series. If you don't have this cable go onto the Raymarine site.
We took a fused supply from the E120 power source with a switch as we only want the camera for mooring. The camera BNC cable plugs directly into the Raymarine one and Bob's your uncle!!#
We had no picture initially on the E120 but its under warranty and they found the diodes had gone on the video PCB (which is a common problem). The board was changed and it works great.
We were going to buy a Raymarine Cam but at £300 compared to £40 I'd rather change the Maplin one every year when it falls to bits.
PM me if you want any further info.

That is very reassuring - apart from the bit about the PCB - as other forumites will know I have had both my plotters blow on me and although the service to fix them was fantastic, it isnt what you want on a piece of kit like this. I can do pretty much what you describe although there isn't a cable on the boat and I am chasing the builder to see where it is and I have a 24V system so I will have to pick up 12V elsewhere

Sorry, I made a mistake on my post its not the video-out cable you need its the video-in cable. The video-out is if you want to connect the E120 to a TV or another display.
The video-in cable is supplied as standard with every E series display but my manufacturer hadn't left it on the boat either, they probably have a box full of them somewhere. Luckily the manufacturer spoke to Raymarine and they gave me one from a new display they had in stock.

I can't see the port transom from the helm on mine unless I bend right down and look under the bimini. This becomes quite difficult when stern-to mooring with a 25ft wide boat and a 20 knot cross wind. For £40 and a couple of hours labour why struggle?

Indeed but in my case that gets you a great view of the inside of a cabin with a rear window the size of a small dinner plate, not the lovely patio doors on a typical mobo

I'd be interested to see how you mounted the camera in a snag-free position (I am considering doing something similar)

We have a rigid bimini on our cat and so the camera is mounted underneath here. There are no ropes or lines in the imediate area so we should be ok.

I would have liked to have mounted it off the spreader but there isn't enough cable and I don't fancy trying to get another wire in my mast!
