Having received my User ID by post, which is cunningly very similar, if not identical to my name, I proceeded to the log in page and then realised that I don't have a password.

I cannot get to see my record until I get a password.

I feel like a hunted man, using my radio without a valid licence.

You selected your own password when you first registered to get an account name on this page here . If you've forgotten, you can contact Ofcom and answer the challenge questions to be reminded.

I've done that, but it just says, "The information you submitted does not have a match. Please click "Back" and try again."

I've tried every combination of my name, but it doesn't want to know.

When I forgot my password, the "forgot password facility"gave me a new one, but this did not work. A very helpful lassie at Ofcom told me over the phone that I had to wait 45 minutes before trying the newp pw...she apologised for this not being said on the web site. Phone them.

Our licence just arrived in the post, were we lucky or are we missing something?!

More than likely this is an automatic renewal of your existing licence which is due to/has just expired.Reissue is automatic and no payment or other action is needed.

Probably so, it had been due for renewal in December in the 'hiatus' period, they sent us an extension then the long term one when they finally got going - something for nothing at long last!!

There you go! As long as you don't make any changes to the kit you have onboard then you won't need to do anything for at least 10 years.

But why are people not getting the same treatment now?

Are they applying ahead of time, in which case what's the point, or previously naughty, or was it just special treatment for those affected by the delays?

People that already had licences will renew automatically.

If applying for a new licence, you need to register and apply online (free) or apply using paper forms which still costs. People apply for new licences for all sorts of reasons. New boat, new to boating, didn't have one previously, etc etc

About a year before the announcement of the new system, existing ships radio license holders were sent a form to fill in. This was to prepare for the new computer system. It was to confirm the details already held on file. I did not actually return mine and was chased by phone on several occasions and eventually completed the questions over the phone. I reckon a lot of people fell through the net. But last year, before my license expired - after October 1st as it happens - I received the old disk together with a letter saying that here was my free licnece valid for I think 6 months at which time my new, life licnece would be sent. It was! I subsequently sold the boat and then bought a new one and changed the license on-line to my name - as it happens all very easily! I still don't know why folk still complain about the site. It works fine, although I did have problems printing off the license via IE, but I did it via Firefox with no problem at all.

If you want to register on line it is actually a fairly simple process and as long as you remember the password you are required to enter at initial registration (your responsibility /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif) then you should have no problems at all. Your user name, and this is more often than not your first initial and surname - unless of course you are John Smith and you ain't the first to register - is sent by post is so that it confirms your address.

When I run VHF courses I pull up the web site on screen and show people how to apply, sometimes they do it after the course with me guiding them through it.

The other thing that you can do on the site is ask it to remember the details and when you log in it's already got your password and away you go.

Could that have been a random one, because I certainly didn't get one.

In defence of the Ofcom site, I have had no problems with it at all. It even managed to link my ship radio licence with my transportable licence, (in my case I do need a seperate licence for my handheld VHF, before anyone comments) renewable on different dates and auto, atically issued me with new 'free' licences 2/3 weeks before the old licences expired.
