Oddly enough, no sooner had I mentioned folding lobster pots to Madame Sgeir (see the fishing thread) than I bumped into a man selling them on a stall at Tarbert today (well, Sunday actually). Different shapes and sizes, but all designed to take up little space on a yacht, I bought a very neat one shown in collapsed and expanded forms at http://yachty-pots.com/index.htm.

I also solves the problem of how to get rid of your old mackeral - bait.

He was selling them at Beaulieu and they looked quite good. I didn't bother buying one as we don't have a big enough pan to take a lobster; but it was tempting.

Don't forget that, if you want to be really professional about using them then it is important that you use an old black plastic bottle as a float. Make sure that it is half submerged at all times. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Best bait is Mackeral, use the head and leave the guts trailing, this will bring lots of attention, dont leave down too long half aday at most otherwise the bait will all be used by small crabs. Weedy and rocky habitat the best, if you use a folding pot make sure they have enough weight added to keep the pot on the seabed............watch out if you get a Conger in it, their teeth are VVVVVVV sharp!!!!!had a few months many years ago working on a pot boat out of in Guernsey, still no better fun than hauling a pot and seeing what you have.

Good fishing

Have used one sailing out of Adelaide - great piece of kit. Frozen chicken was the best bait there - had them lining up to be snatched from the water. Mind did catch a blowfish as well so extreme care but unlikely to see many of those in UK waters!

The right bait for lobster

This could be one of these things that becomes a monumental effort. Our time-spent/mackeral-caught ratio is a bit on the high side (in favour of the time). So, in order to catch lobster, I'll need to catch more mackeral. So, to improve my time/catch ratio, I'll need to buy a hydrovane or paravane thingy, unless I do a PBO with some glue and an an old cornflakes packet.

On the other hand, I could use the Tarbert-recommended alternative bait - using a tin of tuna fish or sardines, and knocking a screwdriver through it a couple of times. I've also heard of corned beef being used. Doubt if FB has the density for the job - it would all disperse within minutes.

Given my previous success with fishing, we'll probably catch conger eel intead. How do you get them out with out losing your fingers? So I'll probably need to invest in an iron-moulder's leather apron and gloves.

Joe's raised the point about about having to carry a big enough pot. That's another item for the shopping list.

Unless I just keep the lobster as a pet.

Commercial pots have a door you can open making it easy to shake out the catch, the folding pots on ebay don't, just put your hand around its body behind its head, watch its claws as they can give a very nasty nip. A good idea then to put elastic bands around its claws to stop them opening...........the big problem you have now is to catch one!!!!

Re: The right bait for lobster

I trail a mackeral line with 3 hooks and silver lure attached to a 2lb weight, at about 4kts this sits at about the right depth which for mackeral is not very deep, keep a finger around the line and you will feel them jump on.You cannot fail in the Clyde from about June onwards..... As for conger in the pot we used to use a large hook attached to a piece of string.....someone who pulled the short straw had to stick it in the eels mouth and haul it out of the pot as everyone else hid!!!!! Now you have a very large conger slithering around on the deck, try picking it up behind its head and putting in the bait box.......that will teach it to come in our pots!!!

Starboard, you seem to be very knowlegable for someone who has yet to catch a lobster, you even rejected my lobster pot saying they were no good, now your the expert, we will see

I do like the idea of a tin of pilchards though, when you pull the pot up you can eat the lobster and have pilchard sandwiches with whats left in the tin

By the way, great gardens at Broddick Castle and the weather for once was great

Re: The right bait for lobster

I used mine for the first time off Llandwyn Island (Anglesey) on Sunday night. Very impressive! Due to a somewhat poor result catching mackerel on the way from Holyhead, I used some canned mackerel for mate. 3 hours after chucking it over the side (on a length of fishing line, whilst at anchor) I had 15 crabs, 3 snails and a prawn. All the crabs were too small to be of any use, and I ain't into snails. I decided that one prawn was not worth much, so let the lot go. FWIW, the the pot has a zip on the side which makes catch removal a pretty simple affair.

Knowledgable yes about lobsters, a miss spent youth in Guernsey saw to that........as for those mickey mouse pots only time will tell, anyhow you should be an expert now after all those emails that have come your way regarding the subject.

Yeah gardens were great and the sail home too.........shame you had to motor!! you missed a good sail. Now on drying grid awaiting tommorrows high tide to come off, tonights was 100mm too short!!! Some times a nice high comes when you dont need it .

Re: Speaking of pets

Assuming you catch the lobster, is there any way of ..er..welll...killing it other than boiling it alive?

Daughter would revolt at the suggestion and to be honest I don't fancy it either - for the lobster I mean.

It does seem rather cruel.

Don\'t forget!

To register with the MCA that you are now are fully card carrying potting boat and as such need to record your catch for quoters etc.

Best of Luck? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
