If they do ban cheap red diesel for boats how long before the red colour in my tank vanishes?
If I inadvertantly filled my fuel tank with red diesel instead of tax paid white how would they prove that I hadn't bought it when it was legal?
And anyway, if I can afford to fill my Landrover at £60 a time once a fortnight it isn't going to add much to the familly budget to fill the boat twice a year, 14hp doesn't drink much.

Why don't you just tell them you filled up in Belgium?
It will still be legal there!

European rules?! My foot - another one of Browns stealth taxes more likely.

In fact it is more than just red dye .... it is also a Yellow Chemical Marker as well.

They are detectable right down to extremely low levels and take a good time to 'dilute' down to miniscule level that is accepted as ok.

I think in terms of boats - surely they will have a reasonable amount of leeway on it - as there will be many boats over the date still with red in tank etc. etc. ...... plus the fact that boats legally used red up to the last moment ....

I wonder how long,,,,,,,,,
Suppose I start the season with a full 20galls of red then we have to buy derv. I half empty the tank and fill with white. that's 50:50. do it again that season makes it 25:75 then we fill up at the end of the season and so start the nest year with a 12,5:87.5 mix in the tank,,,,,,,,,,, It could take YEARS before they could reasonably expect us all to be clear So how would they prove that some of that 'red diesel went in after the cutoff date? "Sorry officer, I hardly ever use the engine,,,,,,"
Could be fun, the more so given the yachtsmans delight in duty free stuff. :)

This raises the question of whether it's just leisure boaters who will have to pay full deisel duty, leaving the farmers and commercial fishermen free to use red. Or will there be a blanket ban leading to the disappearance of red altogether.
My own feeling is that even GB would bite more than he could chew if the latter. How could he justify tax free fuel for airlines if every other user is hammered.
Its been said before, but making yotties and mobos pay duty just wouldn't be worth the grief.
Tax harmonisation can't be used as a justification... there isn't even a sign HMG is moving to harmonise pension taxation.

Fuelling in Belgium..

we do it all the time BUT: make sure you keep the receipt at hand. You must be able to prove that you filled up in Belgium if you have red diesel.

Having said that....... We have our own trick for keeping our tank full, and we need to as we also use diesel for heating (liveaboards) but as a sailing yacht you know that customs can never tell how much motoring you have done, if you don't write it down in your log

cheers

After a 3 month trip this summer filling up with tax paid diesel in France and Spain would it have been legal to drain the boat tank and use it in the car even though it was probably still stained. I had receipts for about 500 litres of tax paid fuel put in the boat so why couldn't I drain out the remaining 160 litres of slightly stained diesel and use it in the car - or would I have to prove I had paid EEC tax on EVERY molecule of the remaining diesel?
