The shed is underway and the roof should be on by the end of the week . The materials for the strongback are ready and waiting and lots of advice from very nice boatbuilders has all been taken in .
Ive been looking over the plans for the slipper again and again .
The questions ..... if anyone can help please /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The hog is shown as two timbers laminated together to make a 36mm x 100mm , the inwale is also laminated from two timbers . Is this for ease of bending ? Does the grain need to oppose one another ? Is it not better to do the hog in solid timber ?
Whats a scupper do ? they are optional .
The stem girder is out of ply , can i not make a ladder out of oak to form the same shape or will this not be as strong ?
Thanks for any advice in advance .

The question as i intended it to be seen was is it laminated for ease of bending or does the grain need to be opposed . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Its allways better to oppose the grain direction, other wise you may end up with a bow, But I suppose you could then take uo archery /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes i know thats the reason for opposing the grain i was asking if thats why it needs to be laminated rather than solid timber . Sod it ill build it out of ply

That wont work either /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Look you are a carpenter , just use your judgement and have fun building your boat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But whats the point of laminating the timber if i can do it in solid timber ?

[/ QUOTE ]The finished item will be more dimensionally stable if laminated rather than cut out of solid. Yes you do alternate the grains pattern as far as possible so select your timber with care.

I will enjoy and use my judgement but the point of posting the questions was to find out if someone could point out something ive missed . Id love to be able to say after 16 years of working with timber i know it all but after 16 years ive learnt you never know it all . I dont know what kind of stress the water puts on the hull and thats why im asking . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
