Judging by Sea spray111's Quest for knowledge and his doubting of replies I think we have another "Happy1" here . hope not though !! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
The sections of oak i have are mostly 100mmx50 mm and 230mmx25mm this will have to be remilled to get the sizes i need anyway . Would it raise the moisture content if i left it outside before milling or after ?
I can't see how you can say that. A carpenters "take" on woods is totally different from that of a boat builder.
The two appreticeships are totally different and normally so are the woods used. If a person wanted info the the forum is an ideal place. The "trades" of its members are so diverse the pool of knowledge must be vast.
Ok so seaspray may doubt some of the info. Thats only because for his working life hes worked to the carpenters set of rules and not the boat builders. I don't blame him for asking these questions. His obviously sinking a lot of time and money into this project. He doesn't want the end product sinking as well!
I agree in principle with what you say, the forums is a good way of finding information but people soon get fed up giving info in good faith then having it "publically" questioned . I'm not saying you should believe all advice given here but I do believe advice IS given in good faith and its up to the individual whether the advice in taken or not .
The questioning was with a reason, and eventually got an answer. Just read the thread top to bottom in one go and you'll see what I mean. Bit unfair to suggest because they are posting on a thread that they are anything like H1. Just becuase you give info here doesn't mean it's worth anything, and others will assess the value of your contributions and weigh accordingly. If some of the stuff posted on the forums wasn't publically questioned I'd be having screaming abdabs as some of it is quite clearly wrong and posted by people who have no idea what they are talking about. Some of it is contentious.
Haven't seen any issues at all in this thread so far worth the complaining you are doing
So laying it out on bearers and giving it a hose down every evening and turning it every day would raise the moisture content before milling it ?
If done after milling there would be a risk of water marking and i assume the timber wouldnt be as straight as i milled it .
By the way the roof is on the boat building shed , just the floor to do and its time for the strong back /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
