Having been through the rigmarole of having to get a PB2 certificate in addition to my 55 years experience and YM Ocean to drive a 15 ft displacement boat we have now run into problems with our sailing boat (Drascombe). We are told that we can't sail unless there is a senior instructor present at the lake, however well qualified we are ourselves. Apparently an RYA dinghy instructor isn't good enough to do rescue boat duty. Incidentally the senior instructor can be in the cafe having his tea, he doesn't have to be anywhere near the water.

Where will it end?

There was someone from the HSE on Radio 4 a few months back saying they'd set up somewhere on their website to pose questions and provide answers on specific HSE questions. This was because they were trying to debunk overzealous application of HSE legislation and quash a few urban myths. Might be worth a try to get the real answer so you can find out if someone at your club is afflicted by overzealous application.

Get in touch with the East Anglian regional organizer, he is mustard at close quarters maneuvers, in zero wind & no tide , only hit 3 boats in as many minutes

A very valid point, check and confront this daftness.

On the other hand why just a senior Instructor ?

Surely some retired Admiral - and there must be a lot needing work right now - who doesn't know port unless it comes out of a bottle would be top for the job ?!

When we are required to submit a Risk Assessment and Method Statement just to slip the mooring. When this day comes mine will be wrapped around a spike which will be placed point upwards in said requirer's lower orifice !

Maybe its time to start a radio controlled boat race, then you can be sat next to the senior instructor in the café, protesting this ridiculous rule....

just in case he needs to 'rescue' you.........:p

Who makes the rules. Is it the club or the owner/management of the lake?

It's the owners of the lake. They are the only game in town and run all the local lakes so we're stuck with them unless we head for salt water whereupon we have tides to contend with and get maybe 1/4 of the time on the water.

I would guess its an RYA/ Insurance thing, sailing centers with dinghy's require an SI on site (often they are manager type person).

That has been the case for years, sadly its come to club level.

How old do you have to be to be a senior instructor?
I think I was 19 or 20 but it was along time ago....
