More alternator help please

I have one of my alternators that shows the ammeter on the dash swinging from + amps to - amps when the engine is running. This is on a CAT 3208 engine, so none of your modern stuff

I had the alternator checked and it was fine, is it an obvious problem with an external voltage regulator perhaps?
