People wrestling with the issues raised by the London bombings might like to know that they are not totally incomprehensible. Social scientists have been talking about them for a while - the trouble is that they use very abstract language. South Africa is an example of hatred transformed into a more positive direction from the poles of blacks versus whites to the issues of haves versus have-nots that affect all its people. This was achieved through the example of Nelson Mandela, who did not simply bomb people whose views were derived from the assumptions and beliefs of very different social backgrounds than his.
Do Britain and America have leadership of this stature? We shall see.
PS 'Moral Conflict: When Social Worlds Collide' is the title of an excellent (but a bit academic) book by Littlejohn and others. Get it from Foyles or Amazon if you really want to understand these issues.
