I have recently bought a 26 ft boat and am trying to find out how to obtain a swinging mooring. My budget doesn't stretch to the fees quoted by my local marina (Rhu Marina).
Any advice on how to go about getting a private local mooring nearby would be greatly appreciated.

First of all welcome. I take it you have bought that particularly nice Trapper called 'Merlin'?

I know the previous owner, John. As for moorings, I dont know what side of the Gareloch you are - but try Helensburgh Sailing Club - they will allow moorings to be laid and include you in the Crown Estate's package.

On the other side - there is the new yard on the ex-MOD pier which does moorings.

There is also a place - which for the life of me I cant remember the name - but is halfway between Blairvaddach and Faslane which does moorings. I suggest if you want to go 'private' its best to grab someone who has laid a mooring on the Shandon shore and see how they went about it. If weekend-ing in the Clyde is your thing - I wouldn't want a mooring too far up the Gairloch - it just adds time onto your Sunday evening getting home!!

Regards

Donald

You mad romantic fool. Why didn't you check on the fees before you bought? The worst is yet to come!

DRB Marine at the old Admiralty pier at rosneath is well sheltered. I used to keep my boat at McGruers which was next door till they went out of business some years ago. I may go there myself this year if I can get
my backside in gear and do something about it.

See John Mullen (JF Marine) at the Chandlery, Rhu Marina, Tel: 01436 820584. He will give you all the advice you need. He laid my mooring in the Gareloch and has laid and maintains many others in the area. You can get in touch with me directly if you would like more info. Good luck.

Many thanks to all for the useful replies.

Donald - Yes, bought Merlin from John just before Christmas, I'm based in Rhu so the HSC or Shandon shore would be ideal though I guess a bit less sheltered than the Rosneath / Clynder side.

JJTOP - In deciding to buy a boat I accepted it was the first step on the road to financial ruin, now I'm just trying to extend the journey!

Rhumlady - You might want to check out DSC Marine who have taken over the McGruer's sheds, the boat I have just bought is on the hard there for the winter. The chap who runs the place seems very helpful and I'm told their pricing is competitive. Just the wrong side of the loch for me.

JayBee - Thanks for the advice I'll give JF Marine a call.
