My younger brother is going to look at a boat next week in Northern Ireland and he will need somewhere to put it, he'll be Donegal based. Any recommendations for marinas or moorings in the North West corner? He was looking at Fahan but the marina is up for sale, probably to developers or similar I guess.

I don't think that the sale of the Marina at Fahan will affect the users too much. When I visited there last August for a month I had a very friendly reception. Fahan is the headquarters of Lough Swilly sailing club .There are some issues with access at spring low tides. It would also be possible to moor at Rathmullen on the other side of Lough Swilly. Other possibilities for swinging moorings include Fanny Bay on Mulroy or Downings on Sheephaven Bay. On the river Foyle Derry, Greencastle or Moville would also be possible. My choice would still be Fahan. Lough Swilly is a beautiful place.

We were in Fahan Marina a couple of years ago. Although access to the marina was a bit tidal Lough Swilly was a great place to sail and the access by road to Derry/Londonderry was great. The then owners who had run out of money were very helpful none the less.

Fahan is sheltered. Just be careful when going in for the first time; unless it has been dredged recently the southwest side (as I recall) is very shallow.

Anyone wintered there recently? Their pricing disappeared from the website, thes want to sell the entire marina instead.
