I'm still weighing up the pros and cons of mooring at Starcross on the Exe with a Bilge Keeled Westerly Centaur (probably what I will buy as my first boat).

I've found that drying moorings can be obtained on the Teign for a relatively low cost. Any thoughts on Teignmouth for moorings?

Any other recommendations?

I'm based near Crediton, so Starcross is my closest choice, but the Teign is only going to add a couple of minutes.

For something very easy/nice/not too steep, I'd obviously be willing to travel that bit further... any suggestions?

At both River Exe and Teignmouth, you will have to go to sea to have a sail. You can sail a dinghy on the Exe but for anything larger the water is a bit thin outside the channel. Tidal currents at both can be a bit fierce at times. It can be good to have the option to sail in sheltered waters if the weather outside is a bit frisky. Moorings on the Dart/Salcombe are expensive/hen's teeth, so my choice, in your position with first boat, would be to aim for Plymouth area. You can have a cracking sail in the Sound or up the Tamar and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. I'm sure the locals will advise where to contact. There was a thread on this not long ago.

As Tugboat suggests the River Tamar is probably your best bet for short term availability (next season). Weir Quay provides a friendly all inclusive service when getting started but is a long way up the Tamar. On the upside you can sail all the way down to the Sound on a good day..... Id still want to make sure I bought a Centaur with a good engine if I was at Weir Quay!

Initial conversations with the DHNA regarding availability on the R Dart can sound grim. However, join the right lists and moorings can come up quite quickley for sub 8m boats.
