Have a bayliner 2655 actually measures 27'8" My mooring line is looking somewhat tired so I want some nice new blue stuff for start of season. Want three strand cos I can easily splice it. Question is what diameter should I get, lake use only if that makes a difference. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hmmm...... I use 16mm on 14m Fairline in Solent, which are ample, so 14mm+ is overkill IMHO. I think 10-12mm for you will be fine, also considering the often small cleats that are on Bayliners and other US boats of similar size.

agreed, but 3 strand nylon doesn't have the strength of braid on braid. But the cleats are the determining factor. I wouldn't fancy nigh on 30' of boat on 10mm string, personally...

In the end, it's all down to what you can get as a reel end at the swindlers for the right price.

I'd go to 14mm as well, especially as he's going to splice it. Always knew that knots alledgedly reduced the breaking strain of ropes by atleast 30% but read today that splices do as well. Bugger - I've spent the last week messing about trying to learn how to do various splices cos I thought they were stronger than knots. Dining room is in a hell of a mess.

Ian, this Boat jumble is well worth a visit to start the season off, miles of rope to be had at much cheaper prices than the Swindlerys, many other bargains and a good general stocking up session on all your boating consumables..

Thanks everyone. I have 12mm (i think) at present been on three diferent boats to date and as I say is looking a bit tired. Cleats are big enough for 14mm but is the extra really neccassary or should I stick with 12mm. Inccidentally swindlers want £1.95 per metre for 12mm blue. Online chandlers want 90p per metre for what appears top be same stuff. Bit of a difference dont you think ?

PS-whisper, splicing is really theraputic when you get used to it. My daughter and I have made lead reigns for her ponies, leads for her dog etc. great fun honest (or am I just a sad splicing anorack)

OK, I admit it, I have taken up splicing so that I will no longer feel the need to argue with "her indoors". She's still not happy with me using the dining table though /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

10 - 12 mm is fine especially on inland lake. Even in tidal its of providing you have enough of it in play to enough cleats. Ever thought of doubling it up as this greatly increases strength and reduces strains? Ships use extra lines and also double up.

If you splice some braided stuff, thats best of all,(easy) but if you splice 3 strand nylon and if these are permanent lines for the pontoon and left on the pontoon, then splice only the shore eye to start with and figure 8 the cleats on boat for a few weeks, thus allowing some stretch to take place, otherwise an eye to each end straight off will result in ropes becoming slack within a few weeks.
