Hi there, we are currently planning to return to Uk next spring, does anyone know who to contact for a mooring for the summer months. Berthing fees in Marinas only run april - March and as we don´t plan returning until sometime in June to have a yearly berth wouldn´t be cost effective (especially at the prices they charge) We have a 50ft Colvic, any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Plymouth Yacht Haven have a rolling 12 month contract - you can start your annual contract in any month. Think there is currently a waiting list, but no idea how long.

Nomad - you could try Cattewater Harbour master on 01752 665934 although you might be pushing it at 50'. Mayflower marina also do short term contracts but they are expensive.

Any other Plymouth forumites know if Mashfords still have moorings?

Definetly Huggins brothers, they run Torpoint Yacht haven, and have some v good moorings, plus a good water taxi to service them. Certainly I think that they had availability at the start of this season. PYH waiting list would be at least a year. Plymouth is pretty full in the marinas!

One caveat with Huggins...the approach channel is very narrow, poorly marked and shallow and their travel lift was not powerful enough for my boat - might be a problem with Nomad's (they ended up using 4x4s to assist the lift out and it was touch and go even then).

Thanks for that, will look into it. We will probably be going into Mayflower marina October - March its just the summer months that we are looking for somewhere that doesn´t cost an arm and a leg!

Hi nomad, fine thanks! We motored to Mar Menor (flat calm) after leaving San An. for a few nights then straight to Almerimar where we are waiting for the wind to change to get down to Gib and Morocco.

Our draught is 2m as well so I think you could make it if you don't go in with full water and fuel, near springs though there is a danger of getting neaped. From what another poster was saying, Huggins control moorings outside their own yard and approach and if so, there might not be a problem.

Huggins is not exactly a salubrious looking place, especially in comparison with the the truly wonderful Sutton Harbour Marina which is our favorite in Plymouth by a very long way.

Maybe I'm not being fair to Huggins; they were vastly less expensive for a haul out, they did what they said they would, and the yard manager came out in a Dory to help me get down the channel. I would use them again if I wanted to save money.

We are not so fond of Mayflower or QAB, we have been spoilt by Sutton Harbour.

Say hi when you are passing this part of the world and we can have that coffee!

Hi Lemain, glad to hear all is well. We would love to stay in Sutton Harbour, Terry used to work there but at the moment budget is the priority, if we can get jobs quite soon after arriving back then we will be able to choose the better marinas, Sam would love to be in the heart of all the action. I am also worried about staying there because of our cat (assuming that his rabies antibodies are ok). We are still at the moment looking at a mooring for the summer, as we won´t be arriving in Plymouth till late June, and then into a marina for the winter. I have just looked at Plymouth Yacht Haven and the prices for Nov - March are astronomicaly less than anywhere else, any ideas why. We are thinking that its because nobody wants to be there in the winter. Also does anyone know if the water taxis run from PYH to Barbican in the winter. Hope to meet up with you again for that coffee.

As said. Dont end up on P pontoon. Been there, done it.

The only problem with YH is if you have not got a car. Theres loads of local pubs, but for shopping, you will need to take the ferry. Alternative for bits and bats is a dinghy ride to the (Lake). Need a bit of tide.

We want to go to Plymouth because that is where we lived before coming to Ibiza, Terry knows lots of people in the marine industry so hopefully he will get a job easily. Our daughter wants to go to college and also get in touch with her old friends.

We intend to buy a car straight away so that won´t be a problem. thanks everyone for your input its greatly appreciated. When we last lived in Plymouth we never dreamed we would own our own boat so marina prices and locations were not looked into. Its a dream come true to be going back with out own boat.

Good luck in Plymouth, Im one of the people who are jealous of you and other livaboards! Can you give me some idea of marina/mooring costs? I am looking into the livaboard life, it's costs, etc. I would have a 30-32foot boat.

Hi well as we are on a fixed mooring in San An bay at the moment we don´t pay a lot for mooring fees, it costs us 200 euros per month May - Oct and then 60 euros per month in the winter. We go and fill our 1500 litre water tanks every two weeks, and we go to the Port Authority not the marina, and that costs us less than 5 euros. The only other expense is running our generator and we put in 200 euros per month, this is to get our tank full before we leave as we dont use that much fuel each month. Our only other expenses are general upkeep, and as Terry is a marine engineer and works for Fairline he gets a good discount on parts etc. If we had to pay someone everytime something went wrong it would be very expensive. We sailed from here to Gib and back October to January and found that we had to go into Marinas at every stop and even with the winter rates altogether that holiday cost us 10000 euros.
