I'm a newbie to this so please be gentle!

I am in the v early stages of buying a small family sailing cruiser 26-28 foot, and am thinking of keeping her on the Medway. Annual upkeep budget is limited so am thinking of a swinging mooring rather than a marina. Can anyone enlighten me on the best way to obtain one of these and the likely costs for rent or purchase please?

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

D.

In Faversham You could get somthing for 30-50 a month?

That would be on a mud berth onto a wall with pilinings or a floating pontoon, very safe place and about 20 minutes to get to the swale once tuide is in !

Welcome to the forum. A deciding factor is what your cruiser draws.there are moorings at queenboro owned by swale cc,medway yc; further up near hoo, and as prev mentioned faversham etc.
Depending on draught, type of sailing; presumably in 26, day plus occ trips you will need enough water to get in and out in the day.explanation: hoo marina, sill hw+/-2hrs,my boat 1.8m unable to get in and out in day, unless perfect situ of 0800ish hw.moved to gillingham hw+/-4.5hrs sufficient timescale.
Where do you want to get to?
gill to burnham 8-10hrs, same applies gill to ramsgate, for w/e sailing sat lock out sail up medway, pick up qboro for lunch round to stangate thro out pick, nice anchorage, reverse on sun. nice trip but limited. after hard week do you really want to push it to burnham, etc.
hope this helps. pm for further if nes.

Hello and welcome to forum. Can only agree with other posts already made.If you are a keen internet user a search on Medway will bring up stuff listing all the clubs and most of the moorings available, however there are many little boatyards tucked away which only surface due to word of mouth.Mooring is/can be very cheap compared many other locations. As has been mentioned before you need to pick your berth with regard to tidal access. My mud berth in the centre of town OK apart from an hour or so either side of low water.Prices would vary from the posh marinas such as MDL(old dockyard) and Gillingham Marina through to assorted sailing clubs (Hoo bit Tidal and Upnor trots) and the Victory moorings at Chatham.
Some nice stuff above bridge but not unless you can step your mast ?
Loads of safe sailing with interesting creeks and lots of soft mud and only damage likely to be your pride.
If you are a joiner inner normally something going on somewhere all year round.

If I had a boat on the Medway, I would deffinately consider Queenborough. Swinging moorings, Trot boat, active club, halfway to most places. Get yourself down to the club, introduce yourself, take it from there. they will help set up a mooring. You say you are a newbie, and a club and its members will be able to give you all sorts of boaty advice. I was in your position a few years ago, and would have got in all sorts of problems had it not been for the clubs support. good luck.

Good advice about the sailing clubs on the medway... probably your best bet. Where exactly are you in North Kent...The Thames is a possibility as well. I belong to Gravesend Sailing Club but have a deepwater mooring which I rent directly from the Port of London Authority for about £250 a year. Free tender storage etc at the club, membershiparound £80 per year. Simlar prices at Erith yacht club a bit further upriver..they have different facilities...some nicer than ours... better moorings, lift out ,tidal slipway..but we have nicer clubhouse etc. All subjective of course !! Have a look around.

A number of the clubs on the Medway have vacancies for swinging moorings. You could try Medwy Cruising Club, they have vacancies for swinging moorings in Gillingham Reach just down from Gillingham Marina.

The Medway is a good safe area for a beginner - lots of nice soft mud to take you gently through a learning curve.

Hi
Iam in a same place as you but went a little smaller with an 18' bowrider to start the family in the water (I'm the only one with water in my vains so far). I am looking at Medway bridge marina to leave the boat on hard stand.

Based in Biggin Hill this isnt too far away, if you get any info that may be of help I would be interested to hear it. Having probs with cost so far.

Cheers
