We've had a sailing cruiser for several years but I'm having lots of trouble getting practice at pontoon berthing in a marina/coming alongside near other boats/rafting up/mooring up to a buoy when under power.
Anyone know of a practical course devoted to mooring with a very basic engine?
RYA Dayskipper/Competent Crew is really too general.

If (as I infer) there are particular issues of lack of power or, ahem, "challenging" handling characteristics with your boat, why not hire somebody for bespoke one-to-one tuition for a day or so?

You'd be getting the practice in on your boat rather than a benbavjanateria and could tailor the training precisely to your needs, as well as getting far more intensive practice. More expensive, of course, but probably excellent value for money. Lots of recommendations for training providers hereabouts and on S'butt.

Remind me again Haydn. Which end is "pointy end"?
Or is it a narrow boat??

bespoke needed

I entirely agree with jhr. The standard menu of courses doesn't cover this. Much better to hire a personal instructor for the day, he/she will do the instructing, you set the syllabus.

Otherwise take a sunsail holiday and prang it as much as you like while practising :)

Sara,

I just a level 2 powerboating course with my wife last weekend in Chichester, it was brilliant, with a good selection of weather. The course included quite a bit of mooring which I found facinating, use of springs e.t.c I would recommend that as the others say that you get some training, the course we were on was general, but if you anly have trouble with mooring then as suggested concentrate on that. When we were moored up at one point a great big sailing yacht came to more in fron of us, they did not have a clue, missed the mooring first time and went round again, second time were late but got a rope around a cleat, with the wind they were blowing about 8ft from the bow which was the only attached rope to the mooring, our instructor seeing them in trouble suggested that they powered forward a touch which would have brought them in, but know, they looked at him as if he was a piece of dirt and struggled and struggled trying to pull the boat into the mooring. Eventually after a long while a loads of effort they got it pretty much in, but why are some people just so arrogant, even though none seemed to know what they were doing. Well done for admitting you need a bit of extra training, seems like these clowns didn't. Near the end of our day we saw them sailing out of Chichester marina in a force 6 getting stronger, goodness knows what they were up to, as the crew did not have a clue.

And another thing, you will need these skills if you have a man overboard, no good if you can't recover them, or keep running over them!!! Good luck anyway.

Hi Sara
You do not say whereabouts in the country you are, so it is difficult to recommend a particular instructor but phone the RYA and ask the for the phone numbers of a few local instructors , tell them what you want to practice and I am sure they will lay on a special day. Some years ago I wanted to build my confidence/ability in rough water and Seatrek did a superb day for me , part on their boat and part on mine.Try to chose one who specialises in commercial training and avoid the larger "Horray Henry" type sea schools if possible, they are usualy too busy showing you what they can do and charge a fortune.
Regards Mike

Re: making the link work

when you click the link it adds a couple of rogue characters at the end of the url, after the html. Dunno why. But if you just delete them from the address field in your browser window it's ok. Sorry, I must have bodged something up with the link
