Mooring Charges (again)

Very interesting thread on mooring charges but I have been unable to discern where the bargains really are. I am baulking at the £1200 West Mersea Marine want for a year on a supposedly deep water swinging mooring (more like 2" when the tide's out). The boat is only 26' for heavens sake! Price does include winter on the hard but not lift and launch fees. Not particularly attached to WMM but want all-tide access and a mooring within reach of a battered old seagull equiped inflateable. Anywhere from Burnham to Ipswich.

Any ideas?

You could try a little further North ? The A12/14 is quite a fast road and Waldringfield boat yard on the Deben may have a spare deep water mooring or two, our bill last year was about £1500 for the year. I think they're around £48/foot for the year which seems reasonable, though you are limited to 36' LOA for the moorings.

Not 100% sure, but I think that Morgan Marine may have some swinging mooring availability in Brightlingsea. They are charging £1.45 per metre per week so approx £300 +VAT for a 26 footer...and if you don't want to use the dinghy, there is always Jon the Water Taxi! I think that the possibility of a Harbour Commissioners mooring though would be pretty slim, there is usually a waiting list for the few swinging moorings they have.

why are mooring charges soo expensive the further south that you go? I have a part share in a 35 footer that costs 45.00 from april to October to moor up in Oban and our winter mooring is not much more expensive

The only time I was on the Solent it was on a ( ahem ) mobo , and I can't say I was at all impressed . I got the feeling it would be easier to walk from one boat to another than it would be to sail anywhere . Maybe that's why they're so highly strung /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

A friend of ours lives in Hamble. Nice village - we wandered down to the river on a really sunny day for an ice-cream... I have never seen water so busy. Boats going in and out bow-to-stern nearly as far as the eye can see.. RIBs dashing in and out and water taxis and tour boats all ignoring the speed limit... makes the Crouch look really peaceful!

Tony Ward moorings at Pin Mill charge £19-00 per foot for swinging moorings. Plus Harbour dues. Does not include laying up, just the mooring.
