Mooring chain marker

Hi
I intend to drop my swinging mooring chain to the seabed for the winter (saves wear)
What woud you use to mark the position of the chain, the pick-up buoy?
I had to remove a number of lobster pots early this season, as I did not drop it last season!!
Any ideas most welcome. Tks

I tied a float to a longish line and tied it on to the riser with round turns and at least 6 half-hitches at each end. Bowlines jiggle themselves undone. Mark with mooring ID in case the water board stormtroopers come round under cover of winter and dig up your tackle!

Our moorings normally sink to the bottom with just the pick up buoy floating when not occupied. It depends on your location. You might want to use something bigger and more visible than just a small pick up buoy. Local regs may require mooring number etc to be displayed. Use something substantial to tie it on. Our pick ups are secured to the large link at the top of the chain with a bowline, which has two turns round the link and also has the end tucked into the lay of the rope. "A round turn and bowline with a tuck"

If you are not using a proper marine marker of some sort (like a mooring bouy, fender etc) go for an industrial chemical bottle of some sort (ie not something fro Tescos) as the seals and sturdiness are worlds apart.
