Am just about to get my boat in the water for the first time and have been sent my first mooring agreement.

It has the following in it "Any vessel sold whilst in our yard or on our mooring is subject to a 1% commission" Is that typical of mooring agreements?

It will not stop me signing agreement, I was just a little surprised, do others have this written into agreement as well?

Sorry, normal practice in Marinas. Its a complete rip off, but its the marine industry !!

Lots of ways round it, go for a sail and sell boat in another marina etc.

This is a bit of a hardy annual on the forum. It's a historical thing. The origins come from the days when yachting was a pastime for gentlemen and yards would undertake the task of showing prospective purchasers round the vessel - uncovering and covering the winter cover or rowing them out to the vessel on a mooring. Hence it was a commission thing for work done or for allowing people onto their private premises. Where I lay in the winter does this for customers; they only allow owners and known friends of owners onto their premises for security reasons - which I quite like!

Yes, its quite normal. But still a pain in the arse.

I have heard of people just delivering the boat to another marina, and not telling their current place that the boat was sold, meerly mooved.

It does seem amazing that they charge this, as on many boats it would be in excess of £1000. I wouldnt keep my boat in such a place out of principal.

Yes it is a standard contract but I have never heard of it being enforced for private sales, I always assumed it was to discourage brockers using maina as a base for just the mooring fee. Anyone known of it being collected?

Thanks for the background and comments everyone, I suspected it was pretty standard and probably rarely if ever enforced. I just wanted to be sure I was not being singled out for special treatment.

I can see how it would make sense if you were a broker but there should be an exemption cause for private sellers.

At the instant of sale if on the mooring, set sail, sell boat ,pick up mooring job done. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
