I'm looking at a Moody Carbineer 44. I appreciate any feedback on these boats. Build quality/known issues. More sailor or motorsailor. Safety with all that glass/pilot house roof. Is this an offshore family cruiser?
I own a Moody Halberdier which is 36ft and built in the same era and yard as the Carbineer.
The build is massive and all the fit out out is quality teakwork, I suspect that you would find that the decks as on the Halb are sold GRP laminate no sandwich to go spongy !
I would guess that like the Halb the main thing is to ensure that the boat has been well maintained with all the expected upgrades...for example decent furing gear / sail handling gear / engine etc. All the gear will be very heavy and expensive if she has been 'let go'.
Obviously the usual checks for osmosis apply but none of the 30+ Halberdiers built have had any problems in this department ( to my knowledge and I run the Halb owners Group).
There is one over near me that I make occasional enquiries about as she appears to be unused....lovely boats, sure they are motor sailers... as is the Halb but certainly the Halb will keep up with any of the 'cruising versions' of the modern european offerings due in part to her large rig and sleek under water profile.
Not sure who the desiner was on the Carbineer, but suspect it was Laurent Giles..if so they don't come much better !

Nice looking boat, a bit dated, but in a nice kind of way, certainly got nice underwater lines.....Family boat? Well I would think so.
