I would like to install a Webasto heating system on my Moody 44. Does anyone know where the heater is installed and where the outlets are located?

Thanks

I reckon the eberspacher is a better unit. If you are trying to save money, there are a lot of them on ebay, but would be a bit small for your boat. I would expect you would need the 4kw machine (which is the one I installed). If you are doing it yourself, decide where you need it due to your own use of the boat. If the runs of tubing are a problem due to their heat, consider fitting them in a thinsulate overcoat.

I would be interested in why you think the Eberspacher is better.

I went for the Webasto because of the lower power consumption and I understand from the forums that they make less noise.

Ha Ha..... why not get a Mikuni?

Mine has performed faultlessly for 5 years, and heaven knows how long before that.

The main agents are on the South Coast somewhere, they go to the boat shows and when I met them were extremely helpful, and had reasonably priced spares 'off the shelf'.

They sent me a user guide, exploded diagram, and maintenance manual FOC by return, and I was only glad not to buy any spares off them because I didn't need them.

When I told them about the unit in the boat I had just bought and the fact that it was a bit smelly, they told me what could be wrong, and what would fix it, but also told me first to run it for an hour or so, which I did, which cleared it for all time.

Their expert diagnosis was that whilst for sale in the boatyard, numerous potential buyers will had flicked it on for a few seconds, then turned it off, along with the battery switch, thus preventing a proper heat up / venting cycle.

Apparently some lesser brands burn out glow plugs and some other part which eludes me, under such circumstances,

I believe that the Eberspacher comes with a 14 day timer, and the kits include all that you need to install the system. Do the Webasto or Mikuni systems come with a 14 day timer? Do any of the systems have variable heat output - I think the Eberspacher and Webasto systems can either run at full or half heat only.

The current Espacher kits come with a variable heat control & 7 day programmer. I've just fitted one & am very pleased with it now I've run it a bit & got rid of the "new" smell-see previous thread on Smelly Espacher.

If you pass a cursory glance over the numbers, it would appear that the wab uses less power, however, if you look deeper, you will discover that the eber has more power settings, thus reduces its power setting quicker, and thus uses less power! I am talking abt the new machines, rather than the older ones from ebay - they definetly use more power.

"it would appear that the wab uses less power,"...

...yes, I saw that - in particular, the figures I saw (in one of the mag "reviews") showed the Eber using more Amps than the Wab at startup. I also have heard that some people have to run their engine to get it started properly...

... this is a disadvantage, surely? (don't call me Shirley?).

Or is this simply down to installation problems (duff/inadequate battery, poor charging, cables too long/thin, poor maintenance...)

I spoke to Moody yesterday and they recommended installing the heater in the lazerette.
Having looked at the engine room blower currently in the lazerette that has rusted very badly, I find it very difficult to believe that a heater is going to survive in an area where wet fenders/warps are regularly thrown in.

Still looking for an answer from other CC cockpit owners out there.

My Eberspacher has been in my lazarette for the past three years. This is a quite wet location where water is almost always present in a couple of recesses for rudder skeg and the like. No evidence of any corrosion (or any other) problems on the unit.

On the Eberspacher/Webasto argument, I was told by a company that fits and maintains them in trucks that they are indistinguishable so far as reliability and performance are concerned.
