Moody 336 Refurbishment

We are just about to join the great world of yachting and are in the throws of buying a Moody 336.

There is a whole list of tasks that need to be completed which are not specifically addressed in any of the forum posts that I would appreciate advice on:

The interior needs varnishing, can anyone recommend a cleaner to bring the current woodwork up and advice on varnishing.
Has anyone used a steam cleaner on the interior and decks.
We are looking for recommendations for valet, upholstery and woodwork preperation in the Swanick area.

The varnish you apply to your interior woodwork depends a lot on what is already there. As a general rule it's best to stick to the same type of finish as existing unless you're going to strip back. For example a polyurethane varnish won't key to an oil based finish. Moody owners association might be able to help with what it's likel;y to be.
Steam clean? Might be a bit hot and harsh for the mix of wood and grp. I've never heard of anyone doing it and the idea is alarming.

As an ex 336 owner, you have made a good choice!

Your best course is to get on to the Moody Owners Website Information Exchange

http://www.moodyowners.net/. You can use it as a non member but if you want anything from the Technical Library, which is now massive and a geat source of good data and maintenance info now that Moodys are not around, you will have to join.

You could also talk to Phil Holloway at Moody parts, or Duncan Donald at the brokerage for your needs.

Great boat, the 336, you lucky chap.
Second Skysail's comment about the Moody Owner's Association, the stuff on the website will be a great help to you, it makes the membership fee a bargain (well, it is anyway).
 
Don't want to rain on your parade but my advice is not to rush things. I did once with a similar vintage boat and made some rotten decisions which cost me dearly in both money and emotion!

Spend a lot of time sitting on board, drinking tea and thinking. Then ask as many folk as you can about one thing at a time - you will be alarmed at the divergence of opinion - then go back on board and do some more sitting, drinking (harder than tea this time) and more thinking.

Good luck, welcome to the club. You have already enjoyed one of the boat owners two best days. Let us hope the second one is a long time in coming!
 
Excellent choice of boat. Now continue your wise decisions by joining Moody Owners Assoc. You will find much help there. In meantime consider Epifanes to restore woodwork. Follow their instructions but, after light sanding , a coat of 'rubbed finish' will look like original. Varnishing with gloss is a known way of reducing value on resale. Moody types know what it should look like - and that ain't glossy varnish! There's not many 336's around for sale - so we MOA folk will know whether you join or not!!
