Moody 30 yacht advise please

I am looking at a secondhand Moody 30.
It seems to fill all our requirements for coastal and maybe channel voyages.
The Moody seems to less expensive than others the same age 28/29 etc
Are there any pitfalls to avoid?
Do they sail well?
Are the hulls sound?
Thankyou for your comments Good or Bad

Re: Moody 30 yacht advise please

I had a Moody 30 several years ago and found it to be a very seaworthy boat which seemed to sail better than the you would perhaps expect at your first glance of the hull shape. There is nothing negative that I could say about it really, so if you like what you see, the price is right and the survey is up to scratch then I would have no hesitation in recommending a Moody 30. Oh I remember one problem with mine! Water seemed to find it's way down into the anchor locker and then got under the bulkhead and wet the cushions. I fixed it with some fibreglass and wood, so that the water would go where it was meant to - back into the sea. An easy repair.

Totally agree with Roger re the MOA as an excellent source of info and assistance, being a member myself, but just to comment specifically on the points in your question, the Moody 29 will be a younger model than the 30, essentially being the last Angus Primrose replacement and the 28 newer still, being a Bill Dixon design from the later eighties. All very sound boats, particularly if you get one that has been looked after, but inevitably, the older models will gen require more maintenance and updating , but commensurately cheaper to buy. I would expect a decent M30 to be around low £20Ks, 29 mid 20s and 28 top 20s. Generally 28 held to be a better sail overall, but a bit more cramped due to smaller size & overall design.

I know its obvious, so I have to declare an interest- I'm a 29 owner and think the boat is excellent /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
