moody 30 skeg

Hi

We have hairline cracks around the top of the skeg which look like stress cracks in the gelcoat from movement in the skeg. The cracks have been there for many years - at least 10 and have been filled in the past (per the previous owner).

Anyone have experience of this on a moody 30 - is it a known issue and do we "ignore" or is it a known problem with a beefing up of the skeg needed

I did some digging after some remarks made by JJ re a weak point in the skeg of the M33 in his A-Z article last year. The story is posted in the Tech Library of the MOA site. In summary, after making many enquiries, and with, to his credit, some assistance from JJ, we uncovered nothing, not from owners, Moody, Marine Projects, nor from my local surveyors or builders (and there are lots of 33s up here). I'm left pretty convinced that the source of the information was an article about the 33 written 20-odd years ago and the comment may well have been aimed at skeg-hung rudders in general - they're obviously more vulnerable than those on long keels - or it could have been based on experience of the first dozen or so 33s (1973/4) which were of very mixed parentage.
I'm not sure how the skeg on the M30 compares. Put a post on the MOA Infoexchange - it's a very active site.

I have had no problems with the skeg can you be more specific on exactly where you have the cracks?
