I have just ordered a new Beta 28hp as a replacement for the original Volvo 23hp in my Monsun 31. (Hull no. 759, year 1979.)
I made a plywood replica of the Beta to ensure space.
My only question is what is inside the fibreglass bearers. I am guessing at some kind of steel plate. The original Volvo mounts are fixed down by threaded studs. If the bearers have steel inserts. Has anyone else re-engined their Monsun 31 ? If so how were the engine mounts fixed down ?
Without drilling holes into the bearers I do not know their make up.
Any help advice welcome.

Try this...

You could, as you suggest, just drill a series of small holes into the bearers to find out where the reinforcement is.

Alternatively, if you visit the Classic Hallberg Rassy website and go to the Monsun 31 section, you'll find e-mail addresses of a number of owners who have re-engined. On the same site, the Cyber Boatyard section may have useful info.

Another possibility would be the UK Hallberg Rassy Owners' Association website - go to Discussions and post a new question.

Re: Try this...

Thanks for the 2 contact sites.
I had already tried the Classic hrs site & posted a query. Have just posted on the owners assoc. I don't hold out much hope for a quick reply from either.
I want to install the engine in a couple of weeks time.
I think my best chance will be Halberg Rassey sweden, and hope to contact someone who remembers how they were constructed.

There was a monsun 31 that had a new engine fitted at Poole two years ago. I had a look at her as I was trying to buy a Monsun 31. It may be an idea to contact the engine people at Arthur Brays Yard - I dont know their name. I sail a Monsun 31 evry year in Denmark and last year I completed a round Sealand cruise in on including winds to F9 (from behind!). There is also a Monsun in Fort William that has a new Volvo and the owner is called Chris Carver as I was thinking of buying that one as well so perhaps ask him, again no prhone number but he runs holiday chalets near Fort William.
