Monster Jellyfish in English Channel

Last year, whilst anchored off the Devon coast, we noticed a very large jelly fish in the water. It was probably 3 foot across and mean looking enough to ensure that the kids didnt fancy swimming any more that holiday
Today, I heard from a friend that he had spotted one in Studland Bay this year and that fishermen are reporting increasing numbers of large jellyfish in the Channel and put this down to rising water temperatures - could have fooled me!
I'm sure that Haydn and LongJohn are going to scoff at this 'coz they probably fish them out by hand and grill them for breakfast every day but has anyone else seen these things and are they actually on the increase?
I can feel a blockbuster and several sequels coming on. Tentacles 1, 2, 3...........

A lot of big buggers around Dorset last summer - local rag reported an increase in turtles as well, as they feed on jellyfish. Saw a couple of two foot ones washed up on Studland, but nothing as big as you describe.

Yeah - Blackrock Sands in North wales. They wash up looking like oversized bin-lids with streamers.

If I see one while out on my boat, I consider it sport to salami slice it with my prop!

You southern softies, letting a few jellyfish drive you to the Med, expect they're much worse over there. And yes they are the staple diet of many in the SW, a special delicacy in a certain Teignmouth hotel so I'm reliably informed /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

If the ones you saw were about the size of a dustbin lid then they do come and go. About 10 years or so back there were thousands of the things, but haven't seen so many over the last few years, maybe a few more last year.

The good news is that they don't appear to sting, they just look pretty awful. Did you notice that they always start to dive whenever a boat approaches? Always thort they had no brain, but something makes them do it.

They have also passed quite close when diving, that's what makes me fairly sure they don't sting.

We have lost of them in the Bristol Channel - about the size of bins with short, octopus like tentacles.

I looke them up on the web - but cannot trace the links at present.

They are harmless, maybe a slight tingle is reported by some - they come in a number of colours.

We have swimming with sharks, swimming with Whales, swimming with dolphins ... why not swimming with jellyfish?

Oooh, dont talk to me about southern softies. I'm sure they dont sting through those Michelin man rubber diving suits you lot wear, the question is would you say the same with just a pair of Speedos covering yer wedding tackle?
'Tis true that the food served in a certain Teignmouth B & B has the consistency and texture of stewed jellyfish but I'm not sure I'd call it a delicacy. Crikey, I hope the old bat is'nt logged on
