Monel;- magnetic?

Out of curiosity, following my earlier post on monel rivets, I applied a magnet to the pin of a monel pop rivet with which I had been supplied. It was strongly magnetic. Wondering if I had been duped, I googled monel and found it contians a large percentage of nickel which is magnetic but that there were some monel alloys that were not magnetic finding application in mine hunters for example.

Anybody add anything to clear my confusion please?

Is it just the pin of the rivet which is monel or the body or both?

I would have thought that it was just the body, as the pin is disposable. The pin looks to be steel to me.

I would not be surprised if the mandrel is strongly magnetic as it is most likely just mild steel.
According to a Google search
There are several alloys that are branded "Monel" at least one of them (alloy 400) can be magnetic depending on its exact composition and work history.

Dunno if that means unemployed Monel is non magnetic! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Curie Temperature 35°C

Ooops...Curie temp is the temperature above which a ferromagnetic substance loses its ferromagnetism.

Cold working can increase the magnetic properties while solution annealling can render the item non magnetic until it is cold worked again.

Pop rivets should be solution annealled however after they are "popped" you will find them slightly magnetic.
