Anchored in Rodney Bay yesterday at around lunchtime. For the ARC boats, there is a little cruising sailboat anchored and they all have to sail past it for their picture to be taken, just like any other theme park ride, meeow. I know the ARC is sposed to be a Jolly Good Thing, but I heard many complaining about the weather forecast pre departure, as tho having paid the entry fee they don't have to worry about that sort of thing and can get their money back if it all goes wrong. Whatever.
I failed to raise the marina on the vhf, so had a swim and a few celebratory drinks. Then tried to get the dinghy out and over the side using the main halyard (spinny halyard is topping lift, remember) but that jammed to, so supported the bom with parachute anchor bag, nicked the other halyard. That rigger will have quite job on his hands. However, regardless of this fuss, about dinghies - I am really pleased that this time we plonked the dinghy on foredeck so we could watch the sea on the transat. Otherwise all the pix have a dinghy on davits in the pic, and you sit looking at dinghy for 2-3 weeks. You still need the davits for island hopping, just not for transat.
The scuttlebutt bar is a nice place to hang out, and we stayed all afternoon.
Most special of all (and actually the reason for this additional) is that stingo managed to find Scillypete, ybw forumite round these parts.
Scilly pete lives in the Scillies, and runs a shop there. He is a jolly nice and straighforward chap, and out (not on the ARC) on his Prout thirtysummink with his gangly 17year old son Adam, who is also a good guy. They had another chap along just as transat crew. Stingo found them, hauled them over and we got them some more beers and they told us of the dismasting/sinking thing.
Unfortunately, I got sloshed and so can't remember it all, but anyway P's mast came down and then they had to cut away the mast to stop it trying to smash the boat, knocking pins out etc.
He has no idea why the mast came down other than "rigging failure" but I spose that's like saying you got a flat tyre due to a puncture. Mast finally cleared off the side, so then all nice and calm, ready to rig jury .but paddling depth inside due to mast trying to get back on board, so he knew - that's it game over really, he called his swmbo on satphone first (so it's not the blimmin coastguard calling her which wd be freaky ...) then Falmouth coastgard and epirb, and another boat came along to pick up the three of them. They used the liferaft to get across from one boat to next. Adam reminded his dad that it's the second catamaran he's sunk this year, since he was racing a hobie which also crash/wammed and sank. But main
thing is he's here and all alright, just obviously v cheesed off about losing his boat and no caribbee holiday with family, dammit.
