Last week I ran out of gas and am going to need some help getting a couple of 13kg gas bottles on and off the boat - which should happen this weekend.

However, not being able to resist the call a the canal at Stretford, here I am, snug on board with the Boatman Stove keeping the chill off. I've got a kettle on the Boatman, which has almost boiled after a couple of hours, and a cafetiere produced a couple of mugs of coffee in about 15 minutes. I'll be having a go at a pan of tomato soup in a bit if I'm hungry.

At the same time, I'm watching TV on tvcatchup.com over the Internet, on a 19" TV fed via HDMI cable from a laptop, getting its Internet feed from a Mifi gizmo in the window.

Quite amazing!

So my metho stove is faster than your 'cafetier' thing/ coffee maker?

It's good to have a backup for the high tech essentials like heating and coffee.

The Spirit of The Age

Richard - Upto the boiling of the kettle on the stove it was going OK with regards to back to basics. You are hardly living the Medieval life with WiFi and HDMI. Quite a bit to go before you get back to basics.

Is this the the spirit of the age now?

I wasn't suggesting that I was going back to basics as a lifestyle decision. It was forced on me as I had run out of gas! - my own stupid fault :)

I was actually commenting on the fact that I had forced myself back to basics yet, at the same time, was using some incredible technology.

In my view, being able to do both is great!

Got some gas this afternoon, so back to a cozy coal burning stove, supplemented by warm air central heating as necessary, plus 4 burner gas cooker and a tank full of hot water.

I have no intention of getting involved with back to basics unless forced to :)

In 100years, you'd be complaining your site to site transporter or anti-gravity trolley is playing up!
:)
Or maybe Mother Earth (Gaia?) will have got rid of its infestation of pesky humans with a series of 'natural disasters' .

I am with you Richard. There is a real delight when we re-discover just how effective some of the older basic solutions were. :)

I marvel at some of the yesteryear's engineering and at our forebears determination to make products that lasted a lifetime!
