Modern Calorifier

Hi I have just installed a new calorifier having removed the 25 year old one. It appears that I need an expansion bottle, in the hot outlet before the first hot tap. I didn't have one of these in my old system, is this because the new system has a non return valve in the cold system. Or will it be ok without one.

I did the same as you the winter before last. I didnt fit an expansion bottle. Has been just fine. I have a feeling that there is a small air pocket in the calorifier (being vertical) that does the same sort of job as an expansion vessel.

Me too. I put in a new 25l ECS calorifier and didn't fit an expansion bottle and it all works just fine.

There is sometimes a need for an accumulator after the calorifier if it has a non return valve on the inlet. In this case the accumulator absorbs the expansion of the heated water. If there is no NRV the hot water can expand back to the accumulator that may be placed close to the pump. If there is no accumulator the expansion may be taken by the hoses but there is a risk that the relief valve on the calorifier will lift frequently, wasting water and inconvenient.

My boat was built with a calorifier but no accumulator. It worked fine like that but the constant running of the pump whenever a tap was opened, or even for a tiny leak, became annoying, so I fitted one. A worthwhile improvement.

Mine works fine without one Mike.
I just need to remember to turn on the water supply to it when recommissioning after draining it for the winter.
Probably shouldnt have shut it in the first place but it seemed a good idea at the time, like so many things in my life...Jimi, Para, Webfoot etc.
