MOD 70 Capsizes in Dublin Bay ... frightening to watch

Why did they not let the sheets fly?

It was a relatively slow capsize (for any one used to dingy sailing or sailing a Hobiet cat) - plenty of time to let everything fly.

horrible to see the rig crumple like that and the hulls fall down on the sailors beneath. Very lucky no one was seriously injured. One of the crew airlifted to hospital with suspected back injuries but news is that he will be ok.

That's the first time that I can remember seeing a large multihull capsizing without any wave effect. It was wind speed alone which did it.

The usual capsize for a multihull with experienced crew is to pitchpole when bearing away (when burying the lee bow into a wave).

Very unsual to see a multihull to go over sideways. Most multihull sailors are very expert at flying along with the windward hull just out of the water and keeping it there through the gusts and lulls.
