Ive decided to keep the boat in over the Christmas period, as I have some time off work (in the vain hope of some good Christmas cruises). I took the boat out on my own on Tuesday, which is the first time since February as Ive always had crew to date. I found it a really relaxing experience, just me and one or two other boats for company. I picked up a visitors berth at Burnham Yacht Harbour and managed just fine alone. I also successfully picked up several buoys during the day for tea stops!! I know all of this was done on the confines of the Crouch and its estuary, but I came home with a nice feeling of calm, well being and satisfaction which I hav'nt always had during the hotter months.

I was just wondering how many others 'go it alone' and use their boats through the winter- and if they get a similar level of self satisfaction out of doing everything for themselves. I certainly noticed my manouvering skills were 100% better than a few weeks ago with 2-3 people to help!!!

Funny how it was cold and grey, but one of the nicest days Ive had this year!

I go out alone all the time, and all through the winter. Friends now all married, work long hours during the week, and find it hard to get weekend passes. Sad really, not that many years ago we'd be out every weekend sky diving, paint balling , go kart racing, off roading, etc, etc. It's about the time that started stopping due to inordinate amounts of weddings that I bought a boat!

Find that people on board is a hindrance as they get in the way of my well oiled routine, so usually tell them to sit down and be quiet when mooring unless they are also boat owners, and know what to do.

Hi Brendan

I find it a hindrance rather than a help when a good intentioned stander by attempts to help. On Windermere this is usually at one of the few public jettys. they grab your Bow rails and haul in the Bow just as you were putting her into reverse, you then find it's all gone T**S up, and your potentially excelent handling in front of an audience makes you look incompitent.
"Or is that just me"
Mind you a hand with the new boat wouldnt go amiss cos its B****Y tight in or out of my current berth.
Me thinks a practice when its quiet is a good idea

Would be great but many insurers (inc mine) stipulate harbour only restriction to single handed. Anyone any guidance around this please?

Change insurance companies. Go to a broker and tell them you want to single hand

I'd say find a different insurer.

I often go singlehanded - between the Islands (Channel), cross channel and so on without any hindranbce from the insurers.

In the building trade by any chance?! My girlfriend is going away over the Xmas period, so I will have to amuse myself (mmm, boating, boating and more boating!!).

If you fancy a crew member, give me a shout. You own my dream boat!

Re:No mates ....

Poor Freddy no mates, I'm sure Happy will be Happy to keep you company, I would if I was still there. I used to use my boat single handed out of Brighton a fair bit cos I used to get down in the week if the weather looked better than weekend, but my mates would be working. I asked the wife for 10p to phone a friend and she said heres 20p phone em all/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Well, as I've posted before many times, winter boating can be great. It needn't necessarily be poor weather either.

Its been done before on a previous post, but check this out...looks like the Med but was only 4 weeks ago in North Wales
