I gained a further insight into the darker side of Mobo life on Saturday morning at Chichester marina.

Everything seemed tranquil enough first thing in the morning until the crew of a nearby Mobo began to emerge.

While preparing our yacht for departure we heard persistent cries from a toddler on a nearby Mobo (short bursts every 10 minutes).

To build the noise level a bit more they then start to play load music. Presumably this is the sea based, attention seeking equivalent of driving down the high street with the music on loud and all the car windows wide open?

We notice that all the adult males on board have shaved heads.

Mobo then proceeds to run noisy engines for about an hour - presumably not aware of the possibility of just hooking up to shore power! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Considerable relief all round when the Mobo eventually made somewhat erratic progress out of the marina.

Dont get drawn into the perrenial mobo versus raggie thing. We all enjoy the boating life, and there are prats in every type of craft that we can all hate. I have no problem with rafting up with mobos, the only problem I have with them is having to go around the bow and somehow get onto the pontoon, but if they are outboard of me - not a problem!

IMHO constraining yourself to just one section of the boating world is to miss out on the ability to broaden the boundaries of your sport.

You will most likely find they come from that 5hit hole called London, living life as an aspiring chav tribe, they probably make as much noise at home, reving cars, load music with the windows open etc etc.

I believe its a tribal thing, lucky cos the the other display by similar tribes is to fight amongst themselves and others, although mainly restricted to the younger ones in the tribe, usually late at night in city centres, but not exclusive.

My current MOBO has no Stereo fitted...on purpose. I enjoy listening to music but it is not always fair on others. I am buying an IPOD instead /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Got to also admit to running engine in the morning occasionally as I have no shore power. If I want the diesel cooker on and I have no battery power left have to start engine. Did not realise how bad it was until the other day when I sat behind someone doing the same....urghhh. Now I am uprating my batteries. I also have an occasional screaming child on board....but until he grows up can not do a lot about him. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I agree some people are selfish, but often if you speak nicely to them they will compromise with you. Sometimes we are anti-social by accident!

Of course our Sailing boat has no Stereo, no shorepower (and no need) and is well insulated to keep the screaming children at bay! in general you get all types on all boats.

Well said. However I am a raggie/mobo hybrid. I sail dinghies/yachts and also have a small motor boat on the river.

There are instances of bad behaviour in both camps. This was particularly obnoxious behaviour from people who were presumably new to boating.

We can only hope they eventually realise that tranquility is a big part of the pleasures of boating.

I know what you mean, as you know we have friends who are power boat owners (other than CG1!) and they are all as considerate as anyone can be.

We do though see it everywhere (see Pwhelli post) the no neck shaven head brigade are drawn to power boats 'cos its a POWER thing', nothing wrong with the boats though until 'skipper and crew' step aboard.

Re: Raggie winge (unwashed)

Hm, different style but same intrusions into the hoped-for PAQ = Hamble Point Marina pre-race. Gung-ho types down from town in their BMW's shouting the odds (end-for-end v dip-pole sort-of-thing), spilling their beer, rah rah rah.
We were there for the R the Is. Shouted louder, spilt more beer . . .

You poor, poor people. It must have been Hell on earth for you as you as you spent over an hour preparing to depart. These toddler mobo'ers had just better watch out. How dare they cry! In fact, how dare they do anything other than be seen and not heard. Let's just hope they take up sailing. If they do, I'm sure they'll behave like little angels.

Re: Mobo whinge (not wash) & IPods

I bought my dearest a work of art, megaGB iPod for Christmas, to use on the boat.

In April, she finally managed to get a tune into it. The most difficult operation ever!

My 8-year old nephew got an MP3 from Asda for virtually nix and had it going 5-minutes later!

Moral: Make sure you have a child nearby when you want to use it!!

Hi Mark. Hope you're well.

I agree with you - I've come across plenty of decent MOBO'ers, and the odd one who creates a problem. Just like sail.

Re: Mobo whinge (not wash) & IPods

Can anyone tell me who is now responsible for ENFORCING speed limits on the water?
On the east coast there is a lovely anchorage called Felixstowe Ferry with an appropriate 8knt speed limit. To seaward is the Deben entrance (no speed limit = loads of skiers/jetskis etc) in the river is a dedicated zoned waterski area with of course no speed limit. In between a lovely peaceful place - until the little mobo brigade can't be bothered to slow down, or even worse do so so they just fall off the plane and generate the worst wake possible .... and it carries on and on with complete immunity. The little mobos get a little bigger and bigger and soon a 30ft goes passed at 15 knots! -
Then I go back up the Orwell - also a speed limit in most of the river and MOBOs doing 20-25 knots - even a water skier in tow passed Woolverstone Marina trying to ski inbetween the ends of the pontoons.
If we have zones ENFORCE them!!

Re: speed limits are not enforced.

Last year We went on a tour of the Harbour authority control room the question was asked what was happening about the speed limit enforcement .
The answer was nothing at all.
I think it will take an accident before they will do anything

Re: Mobo whinge (not wash) & IPods

I agree. I was on moorings off Pin Mill for most of Sunday. Speed limits were being so blatantly ignored by all sorts of craft I started wondering if they had been suspended for the day.

Bit of thread drift going on here.

Strake, this could be mobo or sail bad behavior, I quote Chugginaround:

No one is suggesting on its own that a baby crying is a problem. I understand the issue to be just loud, brash, inconsiderate people generally. For that matter, they doent even nead to be boat owners!
