I know we are not meant to use them, but how far out to sea do they work?

depends on your service provider and location. I'm on Vodafone which works approx 10 miles off Harwich then it's a bit hit and miss. Totally un-reliable of course!!

I never seem to lose the b*&&dy signal - in amongst the shipping lanes from Uk to Jersey and the wretched thing goes off at 02:00 with SWMBO checking on progress. I do have a higain antenna at masthead ...

I too am on Orange and once past Glasgow its completely useless on land let alone on the water
