For the first time ever I found myself up a creek without a weather forecast (Dittisham), one reason being lack of a mobile phone signal. The phone is an Ericsson 550i and I think an external antenna high up would have solved the problem. Anyone used such a device? Where do I get one? what do I need? etc etc

That surprises me. It must draw a bit of power from the USB port...

You may be able to receive more than 20 stations, but are you able to also send a strong signal to them? Powered only by a USB port?

You need a car kit which actually uses an external antenna connection as most car kits now use the phone antenna.

I use a Nokie 6310 and external antenna. Mind you you d have better chance in Dittsum using the phone box...so long as you have the energy to climb the hill

External antennas for mobile phones high up, ie long way away from the phone, need very low loss coaxial cable, (very big, stiff and heavy) due to the high frequency and loss of signal strength, in cable. Unless you want to permanently rig one, I would steer away from that course. (I tried/have one, wish I didnt bother) Car antenna, maybe, but cable very short.

I second what Englander says. Coax cable losses increase dramatically with frequency. and mobile phones are very high frequency.

So while you improve the signal strength with a high antenna you lose it in the long cable unless you have the low loss type. Which usually means large diameter.

So a few metres of large low loss cable, a cell phone mobile antenna and a suitable plug to your phone (if it has a socket) and you should get some improvement in range. Mount the antenna as high as possible with as short a cable run as possible. good luck olewill
