Evening chums,
anyone know of or maybe recommend alarm system for boat that automatically sends warning to a phone.
Thanks

Check out CQR security web site (google it), they have a great little gadget that will send you (or five other mobile phone numbers) a text up to 5 inputs (eg magnetic contacts) best bit though is you can phone it and switch a relay on! so in theory you could turn your heating on, sound a siren or strobe many possibilities. very low current draw I think 100mA, could also be used to track your boat .

I have a Mobilarm system fitted. No problem with the unit, but there have been 3 instances in the past 12 months of the text message taking several hours to get through the mobile network (Orange).

When this happens you are effectively locked out of the boat. To prevent this I would prefer an alternative means of unlocking, eg key or fob.

Other than that, the unit does what it says on the tin. 4 switchable inputs/outputs, so can be used to switch the fridge on the day before you sail, and it also allows you to phone up and listen to the boat (how sad is that!)

One problem with texts is mentioned in this thread, and was coincidentally highlighted on the BBC Breakfast show this morning. Texts can sometimes get seriously delayed, 12 hours or more sometimes, so texts are not a suitable medium for an alarm system. Just imagine that your bilge alarm sends a text. A few hours later you receive a call from a friend who has just seen the mast of your boat poking above the surface, an hour or two later the text arrives.
I would look for a system that phones your landline and mobile numbers, with a recorded alarm message.

I guess this can happen most often on New Years Eve, and this sort of time. So I take your point, however If you test your text system by txting yourself you will find it works 99.9% of the time.

The 3 times I quoted were all Saturday afternoons - possibly due to football results. The delay was about 2 hours.

However, I can confirm Piddy's post - there is a firmware upgrade to the Mobilarm to allow it to be locally set/reset.

Also, I seem to recall that the default alarm setting for the Mobilarm makes a phone call, as well as sending a text. No message, but you can listen to the boat, and the caller id will show you that the call is from the boat. I will confirm this tomorrow, as my instructions are on the boat.
