My life-ring on the stern is fitted with a clip and flashing light, but I hardly ever sail at night. Would it make more sense to adapt the clip and fit a cannister of orange smoke? I don't know how long it will smoke for -- one minute? You'd first throw the smoke overboard, then the lifering and dan buoy, then turn around and settle on track with the MOB in sight and dead ahead. By the time the smoke died away you'd be pretty close. For that matter, why don''t they make special slow-burning smokes for this purpose? Is this a good idea or am I missing something obvious? Please discuss.

You'll get about 40 secs burn out of a standard h/held and 3 mins out of a lifesmoke canister. Your main problem may be the amount of time it's going to take to get all this lot over the side and probably steer the boat as well. The basic idea is good though.
Have you thought about using one of the personel day/night flares and clipping it to the dahn. They are reasonably small waterproof to 30 mts and have both red flare and orange smoke in them. That way if you get the life ring and dahn away your MOB could activate the flare.
Just a thought!
