I have a Bavaria 34 in the Netherlands but I am from the UK. Boat was on the small ships register in the UK, expired now. Getting a new AIS radio. I understand the MMSI number stays with the boat. Do I register with Ofcom?

Any advice on radios welcome. Looking for send and receive. Thank you. Fiona

If the boat is UK flagged you keep the UK MMSI, if it's Netherlands flagged you will need a Netherlands MMSI.

You say "AIS radio", a VHF with send and receive AIS built in is very rare. Do you actually just mean an AIS ?

The MMSI is Dutch as I bought the boat in the Netherlands. The boat stays in the Netherlands but I am still resident in the UK. I put the boat on the small ships register in the UK which has expired.

Have found a B and G radio which will send and receive AIS

IIf you have a radio with GMDSS then it should be programmed with the MMSI number allocated by the flag station and this is the same MMSI number that is installed in the AIS transmitter.

Part of the registration procedure includes emergency contact details. It is important that these are correct. You need to find out which you have and are the records correct . A call to Ofcom may help.

So if it is now UK flagged (ie on SSR) then you need a UK MMSI number. Easily obtained as part of the UK Ships Radio Licence

If the boat is UK flagged it has to have a UK MMSI

I didn't say they don't exist, just that they are rare and expensive. If there is nothing wring with the existing VHF you could just fit an AIS.

The B&G you mention uses the older Class B AIS protocol, rather than the newer Class B+. It also does not include a splitter, so needs a 2nd VHF antenna, or a separate splitter.

The Emtrak X100 is a much better device, it does include a splitter and uses the latest AIS protocol (B+). It costs slightly more than the B&G but the fact it has the integrated splitter actually makes it work out less. X100 - em-trak
