If I were to buy a brand new unused DSC vhf radio from a friend as opposed to a shop or dealer how do I get my mmsi no? its not been used so hasent been registered with an mmsi.
Thanks C_W
you get Ofcom to ammend your marine vhf radio license to include DSC, then they issue you with MMSI number. You can do this online, though the website is a bit of a pain. You need to register with Ofcom first, and get an password by snail mail, then update your details on the site.
Why would you want to go DSC? Do you want alarms going off and having to go below to silence them? Fit the radio by all means but forget about programming in the MMSI no. Stay with VHF and no worries about the DSC alarms.. IMHO of course.
In the whole of this summer and over 500 miles sailed, with a lot in the Solent, I only got a couple of DSC alarms. I think a lot of these stories relate to the early days of DSC.
Just left an anchorage in Chi Harbour earlier this year & had the VHF turned down and thinking about a quick nip outside rather than go backk to my mooring. As Malcb said it's rare for the alarm to go off but it did. Coastie had just sent out a warning of a fog bank approaching & within half an hour people were reporting vis down below 50m.

If you have a DSC capable VHF set - whether you program the MMSI or not, will have little effect.
And in my experience - once you're outside the Solent, the DSC alarm goes off once in a blue moon.
[/ QUOTE ]I am not aware of any DSC sets that have DSC (dis)functionality without a valid MMSI number. Perhaps you can advise, just so I know which not to buy should I need to replace the existing set (No MMSI no. and NO alarms).
